Cheating!

I was scribbling furiously. How could such a question appear in the exam! We haven’t even learned it! Beads of perspiration trickled down my forehead and I wiped it away with a clammy hand. This was the SA2 mathematics examination, one that I could not fail. If I did, I would not be able to go to the top class next year, and I badly wanted to. I tried to mentally recall all the topics that our form teacher, Ms Lin had taught us. Guess and check, heuristics, repeated identity! Finally having found the solution, I started scribbling furiously, pleased that I had found the solution

Just then, something caught my eye. Lisa was sliding her delicate hand into her pocket and pulling out a small piece of paper. I stared at her, my eyes wide open in shock as I saw her nestling the paper on her lap, looking at it and scribbling furiously. Could it be true? One of the smartest girls in class, cheating? My eyes must be playing tricks on me. I rubbed my eyes and stared at her again. It had to be true then. I was now in a big dilemma. Should I tell the invigilator or not? If I did, Lisa would slaughter me. If I didn’t, I would have a guilty conscience. Which to choose? I decided to tell the invigilator, but tell her not to use my name. I raised my hand high in the air. The invigilator, Ms Lei, walked over to me looking at me suspiciously. “ Yes?” she said. I related to her what had happened and begged her not to use my name.” Are you sure?” she questioned me, afraid to accuse an innocent child wrongly. I nodded. Then, she walked over to Lisa’s table. When she saw Ms Lei coming towards her, she froze, fear written across her face. “One of the students tells me that you have a little secret you want to share with me,” she said, her voice dangerously soft. Lisa tried to act innocent. “Wh…what do you mean?” she stammered. “Give me that piece of paper!” yelled Ms Lei. Ms Lei was a kind-hearted teacher by nature, but if you got on the wrong side of her, she was not a nice person to deal with. Lisa shakily handed over the note to Ms Lei. After that, Ms Lei took away her paper, even though it was only two thirds done. Once Ms Lei had taken away her paper, Lisa shot eye daggers at everyone in the class, nestled her head in her arms, and started sobbing. I returned to my paper.
“Time’s up!” Ms Lei said, and collected the papers from all the children. Then, she gave Lisa a long lecture. “Thanks to June, I stopped you from doing the wrong thing,” she said. What! I told her not to use my name! Now I would be in very big trouble! Lisa pounced on my name. Her eyes glinted with fury as I made my way out of the room. As Ms Lei allowed us to go for recess, I heard a yell behind me. ”Stop there you evil June!” someone yelled. I wheeled around to face Lisa and her friends. “Hi…” I muttered. “Get her!” she yelled. At her command, all her friends lunged towards me and started kicking and punching me. ”Ah!” I yelled. ”Please stop!” I begged, but they turned a deaf ear to my pleas. Luckily for me, Mr Johnson, my maths teacher, was passing by. When he heard my screams, he ran towards the source of the noise, and found Lisa and her friends punching me.

He immediately pulled the girls off me and helped me to my feet. Then, he asked me what transpired. I narrated the whole incident to him. By now, Lisa and her clique were shaking from head to toe. “ Is this true?’ Mr Johnson asked, his voice deadly soft. Lisa and her clique nodded. “You are coming with me to the principal’s office right now!” he yelled, his face the colour of molten lava. We went shakily down to the principal’s office, where Mr Johnson narrated what had happened to the principal. The principal listened, and then said that the girls would be suspended for three weeks. Hearing that, the girls broke into harsh sobs. I then realised that cheating never pays

~ Pickpocket! ~

A blast of cool air hit me as I walked into the cool, welcoming arms of the Popular bookshop. I wanted to by a few books to read, so I headed over to the book section of the Popular bookshop. “Hmm, let me see. I heard that a new book series has come out. I think I’ll go take a look,” I muttered to myself as I walked over to the new arrivals section. There, I picked up the book ‘Twilight’ and browsed through it. As I was browsing through it, I noticed a gangly teenager skulking around. When he thought I saw him, he immediately picked up a book and pretended to be reading it.

I decided to just ignore it and to proceed with browsing through the book. Once I had finished browsing through the book, I gave it the green light and decided to buy it. Then, I saw the teenager who I had noticed earlier lurking behind me. What was he up to? The thought played on my mind as I walked to the cashier to pay for the book. It was a long queue, so I started reading the book as I stood in line. Finally, it was my turn. “That will be six dollars,” the cashier told me. I reached into my back pocket and felt around for my wallet. Where was it? Panic overwhelmed me as I realised that it was missing! Then, something caught my eye. The teenager who had been acting suspiciously was holding my wallet! I immediately told the cashier and some of the people in the queue what had happened. Then, I went towards the boy, followed closely by the people who I had told.

“Hey, that’s my wallet! What do you think you’re doing?” I yelled to the boy. “ This is mine!” the boy said. I snatched the wallet from him and showed him my identity card. Knowing that he was trapped, the boy tried to run. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t make it very far before one of the people I had to caught up with him and tackled him to the floor. I immediately whipped out my handphone and called the police, almost pressing the wrong buttons in my haste.

Almost immediately, the police arrived. The youth was handcuffed and taken to the police station. I have learned an invaluable lesson from this – never put your wallet in your back pocket.

~ Drug dealers! ~

“YAY! Final year exams are over!” I yelled. I couldn’t be happier, as final year exams were over, and I had scored good marks. I was roller-skating at Yishun Park. “AH!” I exclaimed. In my happiness, I had tripped over a stone, and had fallen over hard. “Oww,” I moaned. Just as I was about to get up, a flash of white caught my eye. Curiosity got the better of me, and I bent down to take a look. Carefully concealed behind a bush was a small white envelope. I picked it up and opened it. Inside was five thousand dollars, and a note. My eyes widened in shock. I took the note out of the envelope and read it. ”Tang, we’ll meet you at the abandoned house at midnight.” What could this mean?

I decided to investigate. That night, my parents were going over to my grandparents house, so it was the perfect time to sneak out. I armed myself with a torch, and a penknife, just in case. At midnight, I crept out of the house, but just in case my parents came back early, I left a decoy in my bed. Then, I crept out of the house, and headed to the old abandoned house.

When I got there, I saw lights on in the house. I went nearer to get a better look. I saw three burly men sitting around a dilapidated table. “I feel high man. Where’s Tang?” one of them asked. This confirmed my suspicions. They were abusing drugs!
Suddenly, a chilly breeze blew past. I sneezed loudly. Achoo! I cursed silently. “What was that? There’s an intruder out side the door! Get him!” they yelled. Once I heard that, I took to my heels. Although I had a headstart, the drug dealers were gaining fast. I ran to the nearest place where there was human activity – the road nearest to the abandoned house. I looked behind me and got the shock of my life. The drug dealers were only about two meters behind me! Fear lent me wings. I started picking up the pace. My lungs were on fire and my legs felt like lead, but I was unrelenting. Finally, the road was in sight! I ran towards the cars, flailing my arms madly. None of them stopped. Just as I had accepted the fact that I was doomed to my fate, I saw a police car heading my way. It skidded to a stop. ”Please help me! I saw some drug dealers and now they’re after me!” I begged. “Get in,” the officer said. I got in and the car sped away. “ Now lad, tell me what happened,” the officer said to me, in a kind voice. I narrated my harrowing experience to the officer. Once they had reached my house, the officer accompanied me to my house, where my frantic parents had been looking everywhere for me. The officer told them what happened, and told me that if I saw or heard anything like this again, I should call the police immediately. This harrowing incident will be etched in my mind forever

~ Snatch thief! ~

The air was still with the sun shimmering fiercely in the clear blue sky. Heat danced in waves before Tim as he walked home from the library, causing her to suffocate under her sweat-soaked shirt, that made it stick like glue to his little frame. Tim could not wait to go home and switch on the air-conditioner.

Just then, a shrill scream jolted him from his
pleasant reverie. Tim looked around, and saw a frail old woman lying crumpled on the pavement, with a basket laden with groceries lying beside her. Tim ran over to her and asked her what happened. She shook as she related to Tim what happened. A young man had snatched her purse containing a lot of money pushed her to the floor, and ran off. By now, a crowd had gathered and a young lady told him that she had seen a burly young man clutching a handbag fleeing towards Goldhill Gardens.

“Come on, we have to chase him!” I shouted to another young man, who was standing beside me, with a look of curiosity on his face. They ran helter-skelter, no holds barred, towards Goldhill Gardens. After running for a short distance, we spotted the burly young man with the handbag. “Hey! Stop thief!” my accomplice bellowed. The culprit looked back and picked up his pace. He ran towards the Goldhill Gardens street, fear lending wings to his feet. My accomplice and I then ran as fast as we could. My lugs felt as if they were on fire and my legs felt like lead but I was unrelenting.

Then, unexpectedly, the thief turned into a dark alley. Of course we followed him there, and it turned out to be a big mistake. When the thief reached the end of the alley, he rounded on us with a menacing snarl. Knowing that he was trapped like a rat in a barrel, he looked around for a weapon and found one – a long metal rod. Picking it up, he started to walk towards us, an evil smile on his face. Knowing we were in trouble, my accomplice and I started inching backwards.

Just as I thought I was doomed to my fate, a siren pierced through the air. “ Drop the weapon or we will shoot,” a harsh voice said. Knowing that he had no choice, the thief dropped his weapon. Once he had done that, a swarm of policemen surrounded and handcuffed him. My accomplice and I were very relieved. As he thief was led away, he fixed me with a haunting glare. That glare will be etched in my mind forever.

Blackout!!
“Janice, please try to get along with your brother while we’re at Melissa’s wedding,” my mother reminded me. My parents were going to a family friend’s wedding, so they had left me in charge of my irritating younger brother, Jim. “OK mom,” I grumbled. I was not pleased at all with being left with my younger brother, who was well known as the class prankster. “ Now kids, the number to our hotel is pasted on the fridge. Please try to get along!” my mother said, and with that, she and my father left the house.

“OK, here are my rules. No yelling, no disturbing me, or else there’ll be trouble. Got it? Good. Now go find something to do,” I said, going towards the computer. “OK fine, whatever,” my brother said, going into his room and shutting the door.

I spent about two hours infront of the computer. Just as I was about to go into my blog, the computer went blank. So did the lights and fans. “What the…?” I muttered as I tried fruitlessly to switch on the computer again. All of a sudden, the lights came on again. Puzzled, I was about to continue using the computer when the electricity went off again. I then heard a giggle from outside the house. Smelling a rat, I decided to investigate. I crept out and saw my irritating brother playing with the mains switch!” Right, this means war!” I thought. I went back into the house, and started thinking hard. Soon, I came to a decision. I went into my parents’ room, and took a white bedsheet. I draped it around myself, and crept out to where the mains switch was. I went behind my brother and yelled’ BOO!”

“Ahhh!” yelled my brother. His face was as pale as a sheet. I laughed heartily, pulling the sheet off me. Fuming that he had been tricked, my brother yelled at me and said he was going to tell our parents. I raised my eyebrows, searching for a solution. Then it clicked. “Well then, I’ll tell them you were playing with electricity. That will raise their ire, won’t it?” I smirked. Knowing that he had been outwitted, my brother begged me not to tell our parents. I agreed to, on one simple condition, that he would stop playing tricks on me. My brother sulked, but he agreed.
From then on, my brother never played a trick on me again.

A fight in class

“Thank you Mr Lim,” the class droned monotonously. Once Mr Lim had stridden out of the class, the students breathed a sigh of relief. The most boring lesson of the day, Mathematics, had just ended, and Mr Lim had not given any homework. As soon as the echoes of his footsteps had faded, the chaos began. Girls clumped together in small groups and started chatting animatedly. Boys started horsing around and drawing rude pictures on the whiteboard. In the midst of all the chaos, no one noticed Jim and Tim, who were standing at a corner of the classroom and arguing.

“I saw you taking my pen!” Jim yelled. “Well, where’s the proof?” yelled back Tim, face flushed with anger. Persistently, they argued louder and louder, telling the other his faults.

All of a sudden, Tim’s patience broke. Snarling in a wild manner, he shoved Jim towards a nearby chair. Shouting in astonishment, Jim landed and toppled the chair over. Tim sneered and jeered at him.
All the commotion at the back corner of the classroom had attracted many people to the scene of the commotion, particularly the boys. The girls, on the other hand, were shouting at the boys to stop, but they were being ignored.

Despite all the jeering, Jim realised that he would not go down without a fight. With difficulty, he stood up and flung a well-aimed kick at Tim’s stomach. His face scrunched up in agony, Tim doubled over in pain. Jim was beside himself in fury.

Taking advantage of Tim’s temporary disability, Jim rained kicks and punches one after another on Tim. Still, Tim did not want to give up. He tried feebly to kick Jim, but failed miserably. Realisation dawned on him. He was at the losing end.

Suddenly, footsteps were heard in the distance. It was their form teacher, Ms Tan! All the students hurried back to their seats, all except for Jim and Tim. A few signalled to them that the teacher was coming, but neither of them took any notice. “Jim, Tim, come with me to the principal’s office NOW!!” Ms Tan yelled, as soon as she had taken in what had happened. They were both brought to the principal’s office, where they were made to tell exactly what had happened, and Tim had to be brought to the sick bay as his wounds needed attending to. Our class was told that both of them were severely punished. The class was also given a very useful piece of advice – never fight violence with violence
